Unseen in these headlines is another powerful force that began hobbling burlesque around 1937. Ironically, it was not a group of moral reformers but the entertainment industry’s new, so to speak, vice president.

Movies.

By 1937 the technology for motion pictures had advanced to the point that massive numbers of Americans now attended them. Adding to the attraction of film over live performance during these Depression years was that a movie ticket cost much less. Even without the moral crusader attacking burlesque, it—like its less risqué cousin, vaudeville—found itself on the ropes, pounded by sound and twenty-four flicking pictures per second. Burlesque and vaudeville both soon hit the mat, and the ten-count commenced as, unable to compete, movies began taking over their theaters.

Nudity in entertainment, however, had not thrown in the towel. Being nudity, it didn’t have a towel. What it did have, being nudity, was unbeatable power. After World War II, as we’ll see, it returned to the stage.
